The world was already moving toward the cloud quickly, but the last two years have pushed the trend even more, and no industry hasn’t felt the impact. Cloud computing provides more opportunities for increased business efficiency, remote work environments, and cost savings, and it incorporates other technologies that improve entire systems and infrastructures.

As we get fully into 2022, let’s take a look at the top cloud storage trends we’ll see this year.

1. The Internet of Things (IoT)

First, let’s talk about one of the biggest trends that continues to affect the cloud year after year. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of connected devices, from wearables to smart appliances to electric cars. These devices continue to increase in number, and that growth won’t slow down in 2022. 

An Ericsson Mobility Report found that there will be about 29 billion connected devices in 2022, and 18 billion of those will be related to the IoT. Other forecasts predict that there will be over 75 billion connected IoT devices in use by 2025.

All of these smart devices have to engage with cloud computing to transmit and process data. Think of the “brain” of the IoT as the place where all the gathered information is stored and where insights can be drawn from it. This brain resides in the cloud, so cloud dependence is only growing as more IoT devices come onto the scene.

2. Edge computing

Traditionally, data has been accumulated in centralized locations, known as data centers. However, the storage of information, thanks to the cloud, is now become decentralized, and data storage and processing are being done closer to the original source of the data. This model is known as edge computing.

All those smart IoT devices and sensors are constantly sending data that organizations have to process efficiently. There’s more data than ever before. Edge computing helps businesses lower bandwidth usage costs, increase accuracy and reliability of data, and reduce latency, and it is all dependent upon cloud computing.

3. Hybrid storage models

Many companies are turning to a hybrid cloud environment. A survey from NetApp found that 77% of worldwide IT decision-makers and infrastructure owners plan to use a hybrid cloud model for the foreseeable future. The benefit is that they can take advantage of greater operational efficiency and innovation while reducing costs.

A hybrid cloud approach may include onsite storage, private cloud services, and public cloud services, like AWS from Amazon. This combination can provide businesses with the benefits of each approach. For instance, the private cloud provides greater control of data security, while the public cloud allows for more scalability and flexibility (and also offers excellent security).

4. Mobility 

Thanks to both an already shifting workforce and the global pandemic, more people have been working remotely than ever before. Gallup data found that there are 125 full-time positions in America, and half of them, or 60 million, can now be done remotely. Overall, 30% of people with jobs that can be done remotely say they would prefer to never come into the office.

So, it’s clear that remote work is here to stay in some form. Because more people are remote, mobility is a requirement for today’s companies. People need to be able to access information and perform tasks from anywhere they have an internet connection and on almost any device. Cloud storage allows organizations to use cloud databases and web-based platforms to improve collaboration and efficiency, regardless of where or how people are logging in.

5. Solid state drives (SSDs)

In recent years, the world has moved more toward solid state drives (SSDs) rather than traditional hard drives. An SSD works like a flash drive, in that it can store a lot of data but doesn’t have moving parts like a hard drive, and they rely on memory to store information. SSDs are now used frequently within desktops and laptops. The primary benefit of SSDs is that it’s much faster to access data than in traditional hard drives.

SSDs have become more and more common, especially as the number of cloud platforms increases. The high speeds and fast data access associated with SSDs make them appealing in the cloud computing environment.

6. Greener cloud solutions

Data centers can have a pretty heavy carbon footprint. The US Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy says that data centers account for around 2% of total electricity use in the country. An ongoing trend in the cloud storage space is finding ways to reduce the environmental impact, including using alternate forms of energy like solar and wind power. Cloud computing is already substantially better for the environment since it is associated with less energy usage and lower carbon emissions.

As environmental concerns continue to gain import around the globe, cloud computing and data storage practices in general will find new ways to pivot to meet current demands and priorities.
